Pittsburgh

The play, Fences, opens in the year 1957. As all the other plays in the August Wilson's ten play series The Pittsburgh Cycle,  Fences takes place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This northern city is also the hometown of August Wilson. In the 50s and 60s an area of the city, mainly occupied by African Americans, was destroyed: taking away thousands of jobs and small businesses. This difficult period of time for African Americans reflects the view  in Fences that once you have a job you do everything in your power to keep it.
